We have compiled a glossary of definitions for regulations, standards and bodies below. These are terms and acronyms frequently used throughout the Fraser Technologies website. These definitions have been designed as simple one sentence descriptions which may clarify some of the technical terms used on our website. However please dont hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, which you feel are not answered sufficiently well.

Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. EU regulation controls which substances can be used in industry.

UK REACH is a regulation that applies to the majority of chemical substances that are manufactured in or imported into Great Britain (GB) (England, Scotland, Wales) Read more from the HSE

The European Chemicals Agency. Manages REACH and evaluates proposals such as the PFAS restriction.

A technical dossier submitted to ECHA proposing a restriction on a substance, including evidence and socio-economic analysis.

ECHA’s Committee for Socio-economic Analysis; weighs the economic impact of proposed chemical restrictions.

ECHA’s Committee for Risk Assessment; evaluates the scientific risk of substances under consideration.

A formal exemption from a regulation for specific uses where no viable alternative exists (e.g. certain precision-cleaning applications).

EU/UK law (originally 2006, updated 2015 and further in 2024) that progressively reduces the supply of high-GWP fluorinated gases.

Safety Data Sheet. The standard document supplied with every chemical that details hazards, handling, storage and first-aid information.

Test methods used to verify that cleaning solvents don’t cause hydrogen embrittlement, stress corrosion or damage to aerospace alloys.

The standard for cleaning materials and equipment used in oxygen-enriched environments.

The 1987 international treaty that phased out ozone-depleting substances such as CFCs and HCFCs.

A 2016 addition to the Montreal Protocol phasing down high-GWP HFCs globally.
