Solvent Storage Safety – Factsheet

Important Notice on Solvent Storage Safety

To ensure the safe handling and storage of low boiling point solvents (30–50°C), we strongly advise that these materials not be stored in direct sunlight, especially when contained in 200-litre steel drums.

Exposure to direct sunlight can significantly increase the temperature inside the drum, leading to:

  • Elevated internal pressure due to the solvent’s low boiling point.
  • Risk of drum deformation, leakage, or rupture from pressure buildup.
  • Increased explosion hazards due to vapour accumulation.
  • Compromised product integrity from thermal degradation.
  • Care should always be taken when opening drums and pails due to the potential build up of internal pressure, please use appropriate PPE accordingly.

To help mitigate these risks, Fraser Technologies is in the process of updating our drum specification to a lighter colour. This change is part of our ongoing product stewardship efforts and is designed to reduce heat absorption and improve the safety and stability of our products during storage.

200 litre drums in a warehouse

We recommend that all drums be stored in a cool, shaded, and well-ventilated area as noted in the product Safety Data Sheets, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Why Shade Is Essential for 30–50 °C Solvents

  1. Pressure & Safety
Sunlight can heat the drum above 50 °C, raising vapour pressure. This increases risk of drum bulging, leaks, or dangerous ruptures.
  2. Explosion Hazard
High internal pressure promotes vapour release. When combined with heat can pose a severe safety threat.
  3. Product Integrity
Heat accelerates solvent evaporation and chemical degradation – affecting quality, potency, and shelf life.

Customer Recommendations

  • Store drums in shaded, ventilated areas, well away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Use pallet racks indoors or under UV-resistant canopies for outdoor storage.
  • Replace older, darker-coloured drums with the new light-grey drums upon availability.

Product Stewardship: Lighter-Coloured Drums Incoming

To reduce heat absorption, Fraser Technologies is updating our drum colour from standard blue to light grey. This initiative is part of our ongoing product stewardship program, designed to:

  • Reflect more sunlight, lowering the internal temperature
  • Enhance safety and compliance for solvent handling
  • Improve storage conditions
