Miele Industrial Cleaning Machines: Choosing the Right Chamber Size for Your Application

Miele PLW 86 Series

From precision component cleaning to higher-volume production and larger geometries.

Not every industrial cleaning application has the same requirements.

Some manufacturers need a compact, highly controlled system for precision components. Others need greater chamber capacity to process higher production volumes or accommodate larger components.

The Miele ExpertLine PLW 8636 provides a solution for industrial parts cleaning using an aqueous cleaning process. For applications requiring greater capacity or larger component geometries, Miele also offers larger-chamber machine series designed to accommodate higher cycle volumes and larger loads.

The right machine therefore depends not simply on the cleaning chemistry or contamination being removed, but also on component dimensions, load configuration, throughput and production requirements.

The Miele PLW 8636: precision cleaning in a compact format

The PLW 8636 is designed for industrial parts cleaning where controlled and repeatable cleaning performance is required.

It has a 146-litre usable wash cabinet, with external dimensions of 900 mm wide × 1,430 mm high × 700 mm deep.

Its variable-speed circulation pump provides a maximum circulation rate of 600 litres per minute, while freely programmable controls allow manufacturers to configure cleaning processes for different components and applications.

This makes the PLW 8636 particularly relevant where manufacturers need:

  • Controlled aqueous cleaning
  • Repeatable process performance
  • Flexible cleaning programmes
  • Process monitoring
  • Technical cleanliness
  • Efficient use of production space
  • Cleaning of precision components

The machine is suitable for applications across electronics, optics, medical technology, metalworking, watch and jewellery manufacturing, high-purity applications and 3D printing.

Miele PLW 8636 IPC Larger chambers

When is a larger cleaning chamber required?

As production requirements increase, the limiting factor may no longer be the cleaning process itself.

It may be capacity.

A manufacturer may need to clean:

  • Larger components
  • Larger batches
  • More components per cycle
  • Larger load carriers
  • Components with complex geometries
  • Higher production volumes

In these situations, increasing the number of cleaning cycles may not be the most efficient solution.

A larger chamber can allow more components to be processed in a single cycle, potentially increasing throughput while maintaining a controlled automated cleaning process.

Miele’s own PLW 8636 brochure highlights this distinction, stating that its larger machine series are intended for higher cycle capacities or larger geometries.

Miele PLW 86: larger-chamber cleaning for higher capacity

Miele’s larger PLW 86 model series is designed around higher-capacity cleaning requirements.

The PLW 8615, PLW 8616 and PLW 8617 models have a 351-litre wash cabinet, substantially larger than the 146-litre usable cabinet of the PLW 8636.

The series provides different configurations to accommodate different production environments.

PLW 8615

The PLW 8615 is a single-door model with a 900 mm width and a 351-litre wash cabinet. It is designed around high output, with a two-pump system and configurable machine specifications.

PLW 8616

The PLW 8616 provides a similar 900 mm width and 351-litre chamber but uses a two-door configuration, allowing loading and unloading from separate sides.

This can be particularly relevant where cleaning equipment forms part of a controlled production flow and separation between loading and unloading areas is required.

PLW 8617

The PLW 8617 increases the machine width to 1,150 mm, while retaining the 351-litre wash cabinet.

This wider configuration can provide additional flexibility where larger geometries or specific loading arrangements need to be accommodated.

Higher capacity doesn’t mean compromising process control.
Moving to a larger chamber isn’t simply about putting more components into a bigger box.

The larger PLW 86 machines incorporate features designed to maintain cleaning performance while increasing capacity.

Features include:

  • Variable-speed pump technology
  • High-performance drying
  • Flexible loading
  • Programmable controls
  • Conductivity and spray-arm monitoring
  • Modular load carriers
  • Process chemical dispensing
  • Hygienic chamber design

This is important for manufacturers considering automation at higher production volumes.

The objective remains the same: consistent, controlled cleaning — but at a scale appropriate to the production requirement.

Choosing between the PLW 8636 and a larger chamber

The most appropriate machine depends on the application rather than simply selecting the largest available chamber.

This is why assessing the component, load, production volume and required cleaning process together is important before selecting equipment.

It’s not just about machine size.

There are several factors Fraser Technologies will consider when specifying an industrial aqueous cleaning system.

Component size

What are the largest components being cleaned?

The component’s dimensions and geometry need to be considered alongside the available chamber and loading system.

Batch size

How many components need to be cleaned per cycle?

Increasing batch capacity can help reduce the number of cycles required to meet production demand.

Production volume

What is the required throughput per shift, day or week?

A machine that is appropriate for today’s production volume may become a constraint if production increases.

Load configuration

How will components be positioned within the chamber?

Effective spray coverage depends on the relationship between the component, load carrier, nozzle arrangement and cleaning process.

Cleaning requirements

What contamination needs to be removed?
Oil, particulate, machining residues and other contaminants can require different cleaning parameters.

Technical cleanliness

What cleanliness level needs to be achieved and demonstrated?

Where technical cleanliness is critical, the complete process needs to be considered; including cleaning, rinsing, drying, monitoring and validation.

Summary: From precision cleaning to higher-volume production without compromising outcomes.

Miele’s aqueous industrial cleaning portfolio provides options for different production requirements.

The PLW 8636 offers a 146-litre usable wash cabinet in a relatively compact machine, combined with programmable controls, process monitoring, variable-speed circulation and HEPA H14 drying.

For aqueous cleaning applications requiring significantly greater capacity, Miele’s PLW 86 series provides a 351-litre chamber with configurations designed for different loading and production requirements.

The important point is that there isn’t one “best” Miele cleaning machine.

The appropriate solution depends on the components being cleaned, required cleanliness, batch size, production throughput, available space and future production requirements.

Fraser Technologies and Miele

As Miele’s UK sole partner, Fraser Technologies can provide more than the equipment itself.

We can help manufacturers evaluate their existing cleaning process, understand component and contamination requirements, assess whether aqueous cleaning is appropriate and develop the process around the PLW 8636 or the PLW 86 Series.

This approach brings together equipment, chemistry, process knowledge and ongoing technical support to help manufacturers achieve a cleaning solution that works within their production environment.

Fraser Technologies can help specify the right system

Choosing industrial cleaning equipment should start with the cleaning application, not the machine catalogue.

Fraser Technologies can help manufacturers assess:

  • Component dimensions and materials
  • Contamination types
  • Required technical cleanliness
  • Batch sizes
  • Production volumes
  • Cleaning and drying requirements
  • Available production space
  • Future capacity requirements
  • Chemistry and process requirements

This allows the equipment specification to be developed around the manufacturing requirement.
